who was Earl Gray?

I'm just sitting here tonight trying to avoid the last 38 pages I have of an expedited transcript and drinking some Earl Gray tea. It's good stuff. But I mean, who was the guy? What did he do that was so great that he got a tea named after him? Was he just some rich guy, or did he do something really cool? Maybe the world will never know.
